Downloading from YouTube

You may have noticed that some of the recordings on this site are found on YouTube with no apparent way of downloading them onto your computer.
By default, YouTube does not allow public downloading of videos hosted on their site. However, there are a few ways around this barrier.
The steps that you are about to see work not only for just the YouTube links found on this site, but will work on any video on YouTube.

Here is a safe, free way to download videos from YouTube.

Using YouTube Downloader Software:
YouTube Downloader is a free program that allows you to download videos from YouTube and convert them into various formats for viewing or other purposes.
Before you begin, you will have to install the actual software onto your computer. The software can be found on CNET's Download.com.
Once you have finished downloading and install the software, follow these steps.

Step 1: Open the program. Should be pretty obvious.
Step 2: Go to the YouTube video you'd like to download. For our example, we'll use this video.
Step 3: Copy the entire URL (web address, circled in yellow) of the YouTube video. Look for it in the upper left area of your browser window. To copy, press Control + A, then press Control + C.

Step 4: Paste the URL into the box by clicking the Paste URL button. The URL should now appear in the box to the left of it.

Step 5: Press the big red Download button in the Youtube Downloader. Note where you downloaded the video into (look at orange arrow in above picture).
Step 6: Wait for the video to download.

Step 7: When the video has finished downloading, select the Convert tab, then click the folder button to open up the folder and select the video that you've just downloaded.
If you cannot find the video, make sure you are looking in the right place (remember where you saved the video file into).

Step 8: Select a conversion format. YouTube downloader offers many formats to which you may convert your video to. For BVE purposes, we'll be converting them to MP3 sound format so we can use them in Audacity for our sounds.
If you know the FFMPEG syntax, you may select Manual Conversion and enter in your own commands.

Step 9: When you've selected a format, click the big red button.
Step 10: Wait for the video to convert...

Step 11: When you are done, click the Folder icon (circled in black above) to open up the folder where the files are stored, and you will find your MP3 file there ready to import into Audacity.

No I will not be making any trains that sound like Lil Wayne, don't worry.

You have now mastered the powerful skill of downloading from YouTube. With this skill you can now obtain for your own entertainment any video file that is available there. (FREE MUSIC!)
Enjoy!

WARNING: Be aware of other websites and software that offers the same functionality - many of them are SCAMS and VIRUSES; this is your best bet to safely download videos from YouTube.
If you do not like this way, another program that offers the same functionality is the Real One Player. BE CAUTIOUS AND WARY OF OTHER PROGRAMS; AGAIN, MANY OF THEM ARE UNRELIABLE AND MALICIOUS!
